AdMob: iPhone Accounts for 50 Percent of Mobile Web Traffic

Mobile advertising vendor AdMob released a March 24 report stating that the iPhone accounts for 50 percent of mobile web traffic from U.S. smartphones. This is 40 percent increase in traffic measured against August 2008. Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Palm devices have lost shares to the iPhone.

Local TV Station Launches Mobile Sweepstakes

A Kansas City CW affiliate, KCWE, will launch a mobile sweepstakes on March 30. Viewers can enter to win tickets to see "The Phantom of the Opera." The campaign is slated to run until April 3.

The station will promote a keyword and short code on air during Oprah and Dr. Phil. Users can also sign up to win online. Read more

News Over Wireless now offers its TV station partners the ability to do sweepstakes such as this as well as mobile news alerts, polling and more.

iPhone and App Store Stats Released by Apple

On March 17, Apple held an event to preview the iPhone 3.0 and shared stats about the device and the App Store.

  • 13.7 million iPhones were sold in 2008
  • 17 million iPhones have been sold total
  • 30 million iPhone OS devices have been sold (includes the iPod Touch)
  • 25,000 applications are in the App Store
  • 800 million downloads have occurred on the App Store
  • 98 percent of App Store submissions were approved within a week after submission

comScore: 22.4 Million Access Mobile News Daily

A comScore report issued today reveals the number of people turning to their mobile devices for news and information doubled between January 2008 and January 2009. This behavior is becoming a daily ritual for 35 percent of people based on January 2009 data.

The study also shows that half of males ages 18 to 34 consumed mobile news and information.

Mobile Advertising Becoming Essential

Nielsen recently shared trends in mobile at the digiday: Mobile conference including mobile web, the iPhone and mobile advertising.

According to Nielsen, there are:

  • 145 million mobile media consumers
  • 127 million using SMS
  • 70 million downloading mobile content
  • 48 million using mobile web
  • 12 million using mobile video

“Advertisers want audiences, and we’ve already arrived at very real, substantive audiences on mobile,” said Julia Resnick, vice president of mobile media solutions for Nielsen, New York. “It’s snowballing in terms of adoption and usage.”

Mobile Banking Trend Continues with Fifth Third Bank

As noted in a previous post, mobile banking is picking up steam. Today, I read that Fifth Third Bank has launched a mobile site to enable customers to check account balances and pending-and-posted transactions. Users can also transfer funds and find Fifth Third ATMs and branch locations. The bank is also offering SMS alerts, targeting a younger generation, that provide insight into balances and statements.

Mobile Advertising: Nissan and Infiniti Going Mobile

Nissan and Infiniti have launched mobile web sites enabling users to view car information, pictures, request quotes and locate dealers. These are recent examples of automakers adding mobile to their advertising mix.

Michael Bayle, Yahoo’s Connected Life senior director, recently told mocoNews that he believes automotive is the leading sector participating in mobile display advertising.

“We have probably worked with every auto manufacturer in 2008, and many times they re-upped their budgets," said Bayle. "Companies, like Jaguar, have been on record saying that 10 percent of their digital budget is in mobile and it’s only increasing between 2008 and 2009."

Nielsen: Mobile Video Usage Continues to Grow

Nielsen's latest A2/M2 Three Screen Report reveals that mobile video usage continues to grow as does TV and and Internet video viewership. Those who use mobile video reportedly watch close to 4 hours per month on mobile phones and other devices.

This Q4 2008 data shows viewership saw a 9 percent increase to 11 million Americans versus Q3 and is attributed to the amount of mobile content available and growing popularity in mobile video as a viewing option. The time users spent watching mobile video increased by 2 percent over Q3.

iPhone Generates 66.61 Percent of Mobile Web Traffic

iPhone users are taking to the mobile web. A recent study by NetApplications reveals that 66.61 percent of mobile web traffic comes from the iPhone. Another interesting point from this study - mobile web browsing overall also increased between January and February 2009. Read more
