AT&T Subs Increase, Wireless Data Revenue Increases

AT&T added 1.3 M subscribers in the second quarter and said net income increased 30 percent as the company benefited from a surge in wireless data use. The operator posted net income of $3.77 B, or 63 cents a share, up from $2.9 B, or 47 cents a share, in 2007.

Nokia Focusing on Mobile Web Experience

Nokia has acquired Novarra, a company focused on enhancing Mobile Web. The world's largest handset manufacturer is looking to make low-end handsets more internet friendly.

Nokia is not the only firm boosting its Internet browsing efforts in the wake of Apple's iPhone. BlackBerry maker Research In Motion recently announced plans to introduce a WebKit-based Web browser for its phones at some point in the future.

Mobile Apps Predicted to Outsell CDs by 2012

A recent report by Chetan Sharma Consulting, commissioned by cross platform app store GetJar, predicts that mobile app downloads across all types of handsets will go from 7 billion downloads in 2009 to close to 50 billion in 2012 – a growth rate of 92 percent. With CD sales estimated to reach $13.83 billion in 2012, revenue earned off of mobile apps would be greater.

Chetan Sharma's research also indicates that off-deck paid-for apps will be the biggest revenue generator by 2012, accounting for almost 50 percent of all app revenue.

Another interesting point from the report was on the topic of ad-supported apps. Twelve percent of app revenue in 2009 came from advertising. That share is expected to surpass 28 percent by 2012.

Survey Says: Smartphones Always On, Users Show Interest in Ads

Compete, a web analytics company, surveyed smartphone users to better understand their usage habits and interest in advertising.

The results show that smartphone users are spending time on their phones throughout the day. The primary uses are for productivity and entertainment.

As far as mobile advertising, consumers were most interested in receiving grocery coupons (36 percent), scanable barcodes (29 percent), offers to save and pursue at leisure (26 percent), movie theater offers (26 percent), and ads via SMS when going by a retailer with a promotion / coupon (21 percent).

Android, BlackBerry Mobile Web Usage Growing

A Quantcast report shows that the Android OS's share of mobile web consumption grew to 15.2 percent in February. At the same time, BlackBerry's share increased over the previous month, accounting for 9.2 percent of mobile web usage. The iPhone lost some ground to those devices but remains the dominate device for mobile web - 63.7 percent. Rival operating systems comprise the remaining 11.8 percent.

Paid App Downloads on the Rise

Yankee Group has published a new report, "The Mobile App Gold Rush Speeds Up," revealing paid app purchases are on the rise. Some of the factors include more smartphones, more app stores and more expensive apps. The result is nearly double the forecasted mobile app revenue this year--from $537 M to $1.6 B.

iPhone users and others AT&T customers currently rank No. 1 at downloading the most apps and generating the most revenue.

Other points from the Yankee Group report include:

>Nearly a third of all apps downloaded today are purchased, compared with just 18 percent a year ago.

>Average price per app is up. The overall average paid app costs $2.85, up from $1.99 a year ago.

>Apple iPhone users download 60 apps per year, three times the average, while AT&T users download 27 apps annually, or 42 percent more than average.

>T-Mobile and Android are a close second. T-Mobile, the closest thing to an Android pure play, comes in second for all carriers, with its users downloading more than 18 apps per year on average.

>Verizon has the most paid apps. Two-thirds of apps downloaded by Verizon users are paid, the most of any carrier.

Google Enables Click-to-Call Phone Numbers for National Advertisers

In March, Google gave advertisers the ability to add a national phone number to the last line of mobile ad text for any existing or new campaigns. This feature will make it easier for end users to reach a business regardless of their location. iPhone, Android device, or Palm Pre users can click the phone number to call the business.

iPhone App Usage Highest During Evenings and Weekends

Localytics, a mobile analytics platform, has shared the results of its study on the behavior of iPhone users. The study shows that iPhone app usage is highest on weekends and evenings.

iPhone app behaviors reach their peak at 9 p.m. ET on weeknights, Localytics reports, adding that usage ramps up slowly over the course of the workday and then tops out when East Coast consumers are at home and their West Coast counterparts are commuting from work. iPhone users generate 7 percent greater traffic on weekends than during the average weekday--Saturday traffic is at its lowest ebb at 6 a.m., but accelerates to over 90 percent of peak usage by 11 a.m., remaining at or near its apex for the duration of the afternoon and evening.

AT&T, Verizon Continue to Grow

In Q4 2009, AT&T and Verizon added a total of 4.9 million new subscribers - the overwhelming majority of all new subscribers in that period.

Verizon released the Droid and competitive commercials aimed at AT&T towards the end of the year. It rounded out Q4 with 91.2 million subscribers, including its largest number of additions - 2.2 million - since Q3 2008.

AT&T's popularity seems to still be fueled by the iPhone. It also acquired 863,000 new customers from Centennial Wireless. The company reported its second-best increase of 2.7 million customers, bringing total subscribers up to 85.1 million.
