WPRI launched their iPhone App on May 27, and New Media Manager Bruce Morin took to his blog to express his excitement.

On May 26, KXAN Austin News launched their iPhone app featuring the latest news stories, weather radar video, traffic reports and more.

22News Offers iPhone App

On May 4, WWLP-TV launched 22News on the iPhone and iPod Touch. This app provides western Massachusetts and northern New England with LIVE doppler radar and local weather forecasts, as well as the top news, sports and videos.

FOX 12 KPTV iPhone App Goes Live

FOX 12 KPTV launched FOX12 To Go on the iPhone in early May 2009.

FOX10 TV iPhone App Available

Fox10 TV launched an iPhone app with News Over Wireless in February 2009. The app allowers users to get Mobile, AL area news, sports, traffic and weather on their iPhone or iPod Touch.

Advertising Increases Across Mobile Platforms

A MediaPost blog post today recapped the the quarterly Mobile Advertising Report by Brightkite and GfK Technology. According to the report, 38 percent of all US mobile phone owners recall seeing mobile ads during Q1, while nearly 60 percent of smartphone users recalled ads.

Mobile web ads were the No. 1 place iPhone users recalled seeing ads. Other smartphone users recalled more ads via SMS.

The blog post shared some demographic insight, too. In Q1, men showed a 10 percent increase in mobile ad awareness compared to Q4 2008. The 18-24 age group's mobile ad awareness also grew during the same time period from 47 percent to 59 percent. Women's awareness remained steady.

Can Mobile Save News Brands?

MediaPost's Mobile Insider blog features a posting today about national news brands providing new ways to get content via mobile.

The blogger makes several comparisons between the online world and the mobile ecosystem, such as the simplicity of mobile sites which makes it a easier for users to focus on one message. This is a big plus for advertisers.

He also talks about how much more he relies on major news brands when he is on his mobile device rather than online where many rely on search engines.

Demand for mobile video grows steadily

QuickPlay Media's study of their Q1 usage data revealed that mobile television and video continue to grow steadily. News, sports and music were noted as the most popular categories.

“Driving demand from consumers and increased adoption of smartphones has caused the penetration of customers using mobile video on smartphones to be 4 times higher than on a regular device,” said Tina Kaichis, director of marketing communications and channel marketing at QuickPlay, Toronto.

iPhone is enabler for mobile advertising

Market research firm Ovum supports that the iPhone is helping mobile advertising grow. An analyst at the firm credits the device's good mobile browsing experience, optimization for rich media and the type of people that own them.

They cited Comscore's recent iPhone application data which suggests that users have higher than average incomes. Fifty-four percent of app users are in households with annual incomes exceeding $75,000. These users also have a higher than average engagement with online media.

Mobile Ads Predicted to Grow 36 Percent This Year

Interpublic Group's Magna has predicted that mobile ad spent will increase 36 percent this year generating $229 million. The company believes that the iPhone and onslaught of new smart phones are contributing to the strong growth.
