A recent report by Chetan Sharma Consulting, commissioned by cross platform app store GetJar, predicts that mobile app downloads across all types of handsets will go from 7 billion downloads in 2009 to close to 50 billion in 2012 – a growth rate of 92 percent. With CD sales estimated to reach $13.83 billion in 2012, revenue earned off of mobile apps would be greater.
Chetan Sharma's research also indicates that off-deck paid-for apps will be the biggest revenue generator by 2012, accounting for almost 50 percent of all app revenue.
Another interesting point from the report was on the topic of ad-supported apps. Twelve percent of app revenue in 2009 came from advertising. That share is expected to surpass 28 percent by 2012.
