In Q4 2009, AT&T and Verizon added a total of 4.9 million new subscribers - the overwhelming majority of all new subscribers in that period.
Verizon released the Droid and competitive commercials aimed at AT&T towards the end of the year. It rounded out Q4 with 91.2 million subscribers, including its largest number of additions - 2.2 million - since Q3 2008.
AT&T's popularity seems to still be fueled by the iPhone. It also acquired 863,000 new customers from Centennial Wireless. The company reported its second-best increase of 2.7 million customers, bringing total subscribers up to 85.1 million.
